CMI Partners with Highmark Foundation to Feed Double Families

Shepherdstown, WV. Community Markets Inc. (“CMI”) is thrilled to announce acceptance of a generous grant from Highmark Foundation. The $66,000 grant is being used to double CMI’s Food Box Giveaway Program, allowing for two Giveaways to occur per month. This will allow at least 300 food insecure West Virginian families to be fed each month in the 11 counties that CMI currently serves.
“CMI is extremely grateful for the generosity of Highmark Foundation and their investment in healthy WV-grown food as the best preventative “medicine” for healthy living,” noted CMI Operations Manager Mark Peiffer.
Highmark Foundation first partnered with CMI two years ago with a grant for $22,000 to purchase healthy food from local farmers. The Food Box Giveaway Program has run for nearly three years now, feeding thousands of hungry Appalachian families with hundreds of thousands of pounds of WV-grown food, and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars back into the local economy.
