Truist Foundation Grant to Fund New Truck for CMI

CMI is pleased to announce the acceptance of a $36,000 grant from Truist Foundation!

The Truist Foundation is a nonprofit which seeks to inspire and build better lives and communities, something that Community Markets Inc. (“CMI”) is committed to through using locally-grown food to increase wealth and wellness in West Virginia. The grant is a welcome capacity-building resource as CMI continues to expand their programs and impact.

$31,000 of the grant will be put towards a new pickup truck that will pull CMI’s 2nd mobile cold storage trailer. CMI’s current F250 truck is 20 years old and, while currently operating just fine, won’t run indefinitely.

“Enlarging CMI’s fleet of trucks and trailers allows us to deliver more food from farms to food deserts and low-income communities around West Virginia,” stated Mark Peiffer, Operations Manager for CMI.

Most recently, CMI was able to partner with Saint James the Greater Catholic Church and other local organizations to deliver over 10,000 lbs. of healthy & locally sourced food to flood victims in Ohio County. Having reliable vehicles makes relief opportunities like this possible.

The remainder of the grant, $5,000, will be put towards healthy food purchasing from local farmers to be given away through the Food Box Giveaway Program.

“CMI is grateful for Truist’s support,” said Maria Resendiz, CMI’s Development Manager. “Their generosity will allow CMI to reach more individuals across the state and provide them nutritious, healthy food.”
